Week 1: Monday 14th March 2011 - Sunday 20th March 2011

This week is expected to be a mixed week in terms of the weather, with many places seeing some spells of rain as well as periods of sunshine. During Monday and Tuesday, there may be some light snow across the highest ground of Scotland, but this should become a distant memory by mid-week. Many places should stay dry during the week, but towards the end of the week, there may be some light rain or drizzle across Scotland and north-west England for a time. Under the cloud and rain, its likely to feel fairly chilly, but in any sunshine, temperatures may rise to a very warm 18C during Tuesday and Wednesday across England.

Week 2: Monday 21st March 2011 - Sunday 27th March 2011

The second week is again expected to be mixed, with a north-south split in the weather and temperatures during much of the week. Northern areas are forecast to be wet, with several weather systems from the Atlantic bringing bands of rain across Scotland and northern England. Temperatures under the rain are expected to be just below the late-March average. The rest of England and Wales is forecast to be fairly dry and settled, with very little rain and plenty of long sunny spells. Temperatures are expected to be just above the late March average for most, with any long sunshine making it feel fairly warm.

Week 3: Monday 28th March 2011 - Sunday 3rd April 2011

Confidence for the third week is pretty low at the moment, but were currently looking at an average week, with around average temperatures, rainfall and sunshine. Much of the week is forecast to be settled, with very little rain on the whole. There will be some rain across parts of northern and western Scotland for a time, but it should'nt be too heavy. Temperatures may begin to rise above the average towards the end of the week, feeling pretty warm in any sunshine.

Week 4: Monday 4th April 2011 - Sunday 10th April 2011

The final week is expected to see a dramatic change in the weather, with temperatures falling below the early-April average and much of the country seeing some pretty heavy rainfall. There will be some drier and brighter spells, but these will be very hit and miss spells. Much of the country will see some long spells of rain, along with some fairly gusty winds.

Next Week: Will April bring wet and windy weather or sunny and settled conditions.

Seasonal Outlook: Spring 2011

Issued: February 27th 2011

Outlook: Mixed, fairly settled

Summary: Spring 2011 is likely to be a mixed one, with periods of warm and dry weather followed by cooler and wetter spells. March may bring a spell of colder weather, with some widespread snow possible. From April onwards, temperatures should gradually rise and drier weather should make a return. As we head closer to the summer months, things are expected to turn wet again, with little in the way of dry weather.

March 2011: March is likely to be a fairly average month, with spells of milder and wetter weather followed by colder conditions. The first few weeks are likely to be wet, with average to just below average temperatures across the country. Towards the middle of the month, there are signs of a cold air stream from Greenland giving way to bring very cold air down across the UK. This cold spell is likely to bring some heavy snow with it, with significant accumulations across parts of Scotland. This is likely to be broken up by milder and wetter conditions from the Atlantic, with stormy conditions possible during the final week. Overall, temperatures are expected to be at or just below the long-term average for March.

April 2011: April looks set to be a settled month, with very little in the way of severe weather. Much of April will be dry with mild or warm conditions. At times, this will give way to low pressure systems out in the Atlantic, bringing some spells of wet weather. The warmest place is likely to be in the south-east of England, where it may become very warm by the end of the month. The wettest place is likely to be Scotland, where it is likely to remain chilly, with wintry showers possible over the highest of ground. Overall, temperatures are expected to be around the long-term average for April.

May 2011: May is expected to be a mixed month, but fairly wet on the whole. Most of the UK is likely experience several spells of heavy rain during the first few weeks of the month, with localised flooding possible. Things should settle down towards the middle of the month as temperatures begin to rise above the average. The end of the month is likely be dry and settled in the south but wetter in the north. Overall, temperatures are likely to be just below the long-term average for May in the north and at or just above the long-term average for May in the south.

Summer 2011: Will summer 2011 be a summer for swimming at the beach or in floodwaters?

Early Summer 2011 Outlook will be issued on May 1st 2011

Full Summer 2011 Outlook will be issued on May 28th 2011
